Love your conscious approach to Marketing - as it is definitely something artists struggle with. I was thinking about this earlier this morning - take the traditional novelist who's backed by a publishing house. Sure, they'll handle cost of production, promotional, etc... it's still the onus on the artist to get out there and share their work and become known.
